The team travelled to Hampshire FA in Basingstoke on Saturday evening for the final of the league cup, taking on AFC Stoneham.
Stoneham had the better start, winning the midfield battle, however, clear-cut chances were few and far between with both teams standing strong defensively. A defensive mix up in the Linnets back line saw their left winger find lots of space and finish well in the left-hand corner on about 25 minutes. The Linnets pressed for an equaliser and had 3 fair chances but couldn't find the back of the net.
Halt Time: AFC Stoneham 1-0 New Milton Town
After a good half time talk, tweak in personnel and shape, the second half was an altogether different game.
After 5 minutes, R. Warner was found between the two Stoneham centre-backs and despite heavy pressure, sent a rocket of a shot towards goal which gave the keeper no chance. 1-1
With New Milton now in the ascendancy, more forward pressure was applied and a peach of a cross from J. Andrews found K. Bonning in front of goal for a relatively simple finish in the bottom left corner. 2-1
It was all New Milton now, with Stoneham creating a few dangerous counter-attacks, but the defence and S.Tailamon in goal, dealt with them well.
A corner from N. Gray found P. Mortimer at the back post and, as she has done all season, finished calmly into the corner of the net. 3-1
We took our foot off the gas a little and allowed Stoneham to get back in the game and with ten minutes to go, a long-range effort sailed over S. Tailamon to make it 3-2 and an edgy last few minutes.
Huge credit to the team for standing strong and seeing out the game and winning their final Cup final at youth level. The squad have consistently performed in big games over the years and have been league and cup champions from U13-U18. Just outstanding.
